In the Air-conditioning Refrigeration System, What Are the Differences Between Different Refrigerants?

Oct 27,2021
the differences in the functions and characteristics of these common refrigerants

Refrigerants are very common in daily life, and there are many types of refrigerants, but there are many factors to consider when choosing a refrigerant because choosing any kind of refrigerant will affect the overall operation, reliability, cost, and market acceptance of the air conditioning system.

Different refrigerants differ in their heat transfer and pressure drop, resulting in different refrigerant transfer functions, which will have a serious impact on system planning and system functions. Today, let’s briefly discuss the differences in the functions and characteristics of these common refrigerants.

At present, there are several common types of refrigerants, such as R410a, R134a, R407C, and R22.

The capacity of R134a is smaller than that of R22, and the pressure is lower than that of R22. Because of these characteristics, R134a air conditioners with the same ability need to be equipped with a compressor with a larger displacement, a larger evaporator, condenser, and pipeline. The final result is that the cost of making and operating a system with the same cooling capacity as R22 will be higher for the R134a system.

The capacity and pressure of R407C are close to those of R22. Therefore, as long as the system design is simply adjusted, the original R22 system can also be applied to the R407C system. However, the energy efficiency ratio of the system will be reduced by about 5% compared to the original system.

This is because compared to other refrigerants, R407C will have a temperature drift of up to 6 degrees. Therefore, the R407C system will reduce heat transfer when the same standard condenser and evaporator are used, which will affect the energy efficiency ratio of the system.

The capacity and pressure of R410A are higher than R22, and the operating pressure is 50%-60% higher. As a result of high pressure and high gas density, not only can compressors with smaller displacements be used, but also smaller diameter pipes and valves can be used. The use of a high-pressure exhaust valve eliminates the hidden dangers caused by the high pressure of system condensation.

The thick compressor shell allows the system to withstand higher operating pressures. The thicker compressor has the advantage that the operating noise of R410A is significantly lower than that of the R22 compressor by 2-4 decibels.

Compared with R22, R410A has an obvious heat transfer advantage-the heat transfer of the evaporator is 35% higher, and the condenser is 5% higher. The heat transfer coefficients of R134a and R407C are lower than R22. With equal mass flow, R410A has a smaller pressure drop, which enables it to use smaller pipes and valves than R22 or other refrigerants, which will reduce more costs for manufacturing R410A systems.

The above discusses some of the common refrigerant types in our daily life. If you want to learn more about refrigerants after reading the above content. As an experienced refrigerant expert, FOTECH can provide you with professional advice to a certain extent.
